Legoland in Florida Coming Soon

January 21, 2010

Entrance to California's Legoland

Big newsflash–the informed readers of LanceAroundOrlando will be among the first to hear this news…

Legoland is creating a new theme park in Central Florida scheduled to open in late 2011.

Legoland is a very popular theme park specially designed for families with children ages 2 to 12.  They currently operate in California (between San Diego and Los Angeles), Denmark, Germany and the United Kingdom.  Legoland in Florida will be located in the former site of the Cypress Gardens theme park in Winter Haven, just 45 minute south of Disney World.

Based on the information from their California website, it looks like ticket pricing will be comparable to the prices at Disney World, Universal and Sea World.

Legoland is currently owned by Merlin Entertainments Group.  Since 2005, Merlin has been majority owned by Blackstone, self described as one of the world’s leading investment and advisory firms.  They acquired Legoland parks in 2005, Gardaland (in Italy) in 2006 and Tussauds Group in 2007 (yes, they are famous for Madame Tussauds Wax Museums but they also own Alton Towers–a theme park in England that is the 11th most visited theme park in Europe–and the London Eye, the landmark ferris wheel located in downtown London.)

In addition to their new theme park, Legoland will continue to operate what was known as Splash Island Water Park as a separate, ticketed attraction.  They also state that Cypress Garden’s famed water ski shows and their historical gardens will stay intact.

All this was revealed at a special press conference today, 21 January 2010, attended by several Florida dignitaries, including Governor Charlie Crist.

Stay tuned to LanceAroundOrlando for further updates.

Chip ‘n’ Dale Sing-a-Long at Fort Wilderness

December 15, 2009

Chip Sits with His New Friend--Brooke

Sometimes the best things in life ARE free!

One of our family’s favorite things to do at Disney World is the Chip ‘n’ Dale campfire sing-a-long and movie in the Fort Wilderness Campground.

We like to pack our own food, including a s’mores kit, drinks, buns and vegetarian hot dogs to roast on the fire.

Doug with # 1 Vege Hot Dog Roaster

The campfires are lit around 6:30pm in the winter and 7:30pm after the time change.  On the hour, the sing-a-long begins.  The energetic guitar players chooses lots of children’s favorites.  If you are celebrating a birthday during the month, you get to come to the stage for rousing rendition of Happy Birthday.

During the singing, Chip ‘n’ Dale come on stage to help out.  Then, they go through the audience and interact with each guest.  Those who know Chip ‘n’ Dale bring along their favorite–chocolate chip cookies–to hand to them when they come to visit.  This provides the best, most intimate character interaction in all of Disney World!

Chip Tries to Steal Brooke's Food

Our Number One Daughter invited Brooke, her 17 year old second cousin who is mentally challenged.  We packed hot dogs and s’more fixin’s, potato chips and drinks and made our way to the campfire.  Doug and Amy, Booke’s parents, enjoyed roasting the food over the fire.  Meanwhile, Brooke had the thrill of her life when Chip sat down beside her during the show.  After the sing-a-long, the movie begins.

There is a different movie every night–on some evenings they show two movies.  Usually the movie is preceded by a Chip ‘n’ Dale cartoon.  You can search the internet for the movie schedule or call Disney and ask the person on the phone to look it up.  Movies rang from the classic full length Disney cartoons to more modern PG movies such as “The Santa Clause” and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”

Here’s how to get to the campfire show at Fort Wilderness:

1. Drive to the toll booth for the Magic Kingdome (stay to the far right)

2. Tell the attendant you are going to Fort Wildnerness (you won’t get charged the exorbitant parking fee)

3. Past the toll booth, take an immediate right

4. Go past the 1st entrance to Fort Wilderness (this is for guests checking in to the campground) then take a left at the second entrance (sign says “Pioneer Hall”)

5. Park your car and head to the bus stop, which will be to your left

6. Take the Orange or Yellow bus line to the Meadows Trading Post Stop–The campfire is just behind the trading post

There are benches, bleachers and plenty of room to lay out a blanket.  There is a small stage designed to look like a chuck wagon and beside that a large, white movie screen.  On either side are large metal cauldrons which contain the campfires.  Behind the bleachers are an actual chuck wagon where you can purchase marshmallows, s’more kits and long sticks.  Beyond that are nice, clean rest rooms.

If you want to enjoy Chip ‘n’ Dale but aren’t interested in the movie, after they visit you can always head down to the docks near Pioneer Hall and watch the fireworks over the Magic Kingdom castle.  That’s what Amy and I did while Mrs. LanceAround stayed and watched the movie with Doug, Brooke and Number One Daughter.  At the docks they pipe in the music and Jiminy Cricket narration from Magic Kingdom for the firework show.

Chip Visits Guests During Sing-a-Long

Another fun activity you can enjoy for free at Fort Wilderness is the Electric Water Pageant.  This whimsical boat parade travels every night from the Grand Floridian and Polynesian resorts to the Contemporary Resort, Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness Resort.  It also performs in front of the Magic Kingdom when guests are departing.  You can view it from the docks at Fort Wilderness.  The time varies by season and the resort can let you know what time it begins.

The campfire program at Fort Wilderness provides a nice and inexpensive respite from the otherwise crowded and frenetic pace within the theme parks.

If you have young children, then we highly recommend it.  If you don’t have young children…well…go to it anyway and feed your child within…

…At least that’s what I tell myself when Mrs. LanceAround and I go there on a cool autumn’s eve just to enjoy the movie!

Barack Obama in Disney’s Hall of Presidents

December 11, 2009

An Audio-Animatronic Barak Obama in Disney’s Hall of Presidents

Barack Obama, in the form of an audio-animatronic character, is now appearing in the Hall of Presidents attraction in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World.

Disney refers to Obama’s character as the most advanced, lifelike audio-animatronic figure created to date.

Multi-Media Slide Show

There is a lot about Disney World that is not only entertaining, but very educational as well.  This is especially true in the Hall of Presidents.  Located in Liberty Square inside the Magic Kingdom, this attraction was originally envisioned by Walt Disney himself.  It performs every half hour on the hour and half hour.

The show begins with a multi-media slide presentation that speaks of how our country overthrew our imperialistic roots and decided to elect leaders from ordinary citizens.  There is a brief mention of some significant moments in presidential history when the curtain raises slightly to reveal an audio-animatronic figure of Abraham Lincoln seated in a chair.

Lincoln's Speech

This impressive creation becomes eye-popping as Lincoln rises and recites the Gettysburg Address.

The curtain falls and the slide show continues.  Upon completion, the full curtain rises to reveal all 44 Presidents across the expansive stage.  They are introduced, one at a time, in order of their Presidency.  For the first time since the inception of this show, George Washington delivers a stirring speech.

The climax of the presentation is a speech by Barack Obama’s character as well as his recital of the presidential oath of office.  The voice is actually that of the real Barak Obama and was recorded in the White House Map Room.

The show was developed with the help of Pulitzer prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.  The musical score was written by Emmy-winning composer Joel McNeely.  Actor David Morse provides the voice of Washington.  Morse portrayed Washington in the HBO miniseries “John Adams.”  Lincoln’s stirring speech was voiced by the late Royal Dano who was selected by Walt Disney himself to voice the first animated Lincoln for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York.  That show later became part of the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction at Disneyland.

Thanks, Amy, for taking these wonderful photos!

Disney World Handicap Access

Disney’s Guest Assistance Card Offers Special Help

Disney World has long been known for exemplary customer service.

Some people have claimed that this legendary service has diminished somewhat over the past few years.  I know that I have experienced some occasional moments of frustration inside Disney World on some recent trips.

Yet when my cousins, Doug and Amy, brought their 17 year old daughter, Brooke, for a visit this week, I saw Disney at its customer service best.

You see, Brooke is a very special lady.  She was born with some kind of un-diagnosable brain condition that makes it difficult for her to communicate.  Her vocabulary is very limited.  What few words she does know she can only express with muted grunts and gestures.  When she walks, she appears slightly lopsided.  It is difficult to gage how much she understands or what her maturity level is.  She tires easily and can get grumpy when she has had a long, physical day.

However, she is a joy to be around.  She gets excited easily.  It is wonderful to watch her squeal with delight and frantically wave her arms in excitement whenever she encounters something special.

Although Doug and Amy have taken Brooke to Disney World twice before, they never thought to seek assistance for Brooke’s handicap.  Part of that is Amy’s natural tendency to never take advantage of anyone.  Indeed, once she discovered that the Special Assistance Card enabled Brooke to jump an hour long line at the Toy Story Mania ride, Amy stated she probably wouldn’t do that again because she felt badly that she had gotten ahead of everyone who had to wait so long in line.  I asked Amy how old Brooke was (knowing full well she was 17) and then suggested that after 17 years of going the extra mile to care for Brooke, the least the rest of us could do was allow her to opportunity to jump the line a few times.  Amy, being Amy, probably still won’t use the card more than once per ride, but I wish she would!

Amy And Brooke Show Their Assistance Card

To get the card, Doug and Amy went to the Guest Services window at the Theme Park.  They didn’t have any documentation regarding Brooke’s condition, but the Disney Cast Member only asked to meet Brooke.  Once she did, the card was issued without any further ado.  It was valid on all Disney property and for the entire length of Brooke’s visit.  It allows the guest with a disability and up to five members of their party to have access to all alternate entrances for all attractions.

The card goes out of its way to inform guests that it does not guarantee “immediate access.”  It also requests that guests obtain a FASTPASS when going on attractions that utilize the FASTPASS system.  However, Doug and Amy noted that when they went to an attraction, they were never asked for a FASTPASS and they almost always were able to jump the line for a much quicker access.

With Brooke’s physical condition, this was critical as she was able to enjoy so many more attractions for the few hours she could tolerate being in the park before she became tired and irritable.

For an angel like Brooke, who can ride the “It’s a Small World” ride twenty times in a row and find absolute delight in each ride, this gesture of extreme customer service on the part of Disney was very much appreciated.

Here’s a video of Brooke enjoying the “snowfall” in Celebration with her second cousin–# 1 Daughter!

Character Breakfast Dining at Disney World

Minnie Mouse joins Mrs. LanceAround, # 1 Daughter and Office Manager Anne for breakfast

Something relatively new and gaining immensely in popularity is the character dining at Disney World.

It’s a relatively simple idea.  Take an ordinary Disney restaurant, parade some “tier one” Disney characters around during mealtime and BAM–you can charge guests a lot more for their meal!

Perhaps that viewpoint is a bit too cynical.  In reality, watching young children interact with the characters during a meal can’t help but bring a smile to your face.  Even Office Manager Anne and Mrs. LanceAround were giggling while watching Minnie Mouse scamper with a lot of energy through the restaurant.

We discovered a wonderful place to have a character breakfast in Disney World.  It is at the Regal Sun Resort located on Hotel Plaza right next to Downtown Disney.

Since the Regal Sun is a little set apart from other Disney venues, it is easier to enter and exit.  It is often less crowded, which means you get a lot of attention from the characters.  Usually Goofy and Pluto are on hand.  However, when I treated Mrs. LanceAround, # 1 Daughter and Office Manager Anne to breakfast on Tuesday, Minnie and Goofy were the ones to great us.

Fresh omlettes made to order

Omelet made to order

Although various restaurants throughout Disney World offer character dining, and you can find characters at different restaurants for every meal of the day, the most popular one is breakfast.  And while there are table service character meals, most of them, like the one at Regal Sun, is a buffet.  Regal Sun has a character breakfast every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7:30am to 10:30am at the Lakeview Restaurant on the mezzanine floor of the hotel.

The venue itself is very nice.  There are large windows overlooking the resort pool and lake area.  The decor is warm and inviting.  The staff is very friendly.  They often take photos of the entire family enjoying breakfast with a character stopping by for a visit.
Wait staff helps take your photo

Helpful staff

The food is scrumptious and there is plenty of it.  In addition to a hot buffet with eggs, hash browns, pancakes, sausage, bacon and other fare, there is an extensive array of fresh fruit and a cereal bar.  Best of all is the fresh omelet station where a chef is ready to make your omelet to order.  Delicious.

Orange juice, coffee, tea and other libations are continually refilled by the wait team as you continually refill your plate at the buffet.

Throughout the course of the meal, at least one and sometimes two characters make the rounds.  They spend time at every table interacting with the guests, signing autographs and posing for photos.  At the table next to ours, a little girl squealed with delight as she exclaimed, “Mommy, he kissed me!” when Goofy bent over and nuzzled his muzzle to her head.
Lots of good food!

Lots of good food!

Normally, the character breakfast at the Regal Sun is $22 for adults 12 and over and $11 for children ages 3 to 11.  My office established a contract with them to sell the breakfast for $19.95 for adults and $9.95 for children.  You can make reservations by calling us at 407.396.2233.

In addition to the character breakfast at the Regal Sun, character dining is abundant throughout Disney World; from having a meal at Cinderella’s Royal Table at the castle in Magic Kingdom to a Backyard BBQ with Mickey Mouse in Fort Wilderness Campground.  There’s character dining at the Grand Floridian, Beach Club, Contemporary, Swan and Polynesian hotels as well as in all four theme parks.  Each one has a different theme and provides different characters.  Each has a different cost, with breakfast being the least expensive.  Some are buffets and some are sit down meals.  Choose the one that meets your budget and provides a chance for your child (and you!) to interact with their favorite character.

It’s best to make a reservation for character dining.  Some venues, like the Cinderella’s Royal Table in the castle at Magic Kingdom, require advance reservations with a credit card.  Other venues, like the Lakeview Restaurant at the Regal Sun, can provide walk-in service.

Goofy acting, well, goofy with # 1 Daughter

Goofy acting, well, goofy with # 1 Daughter

Whichever character meal you select, plan to give yourself (and your children) plenty of time to enjoy the meal and characters.  By contract, Disney characters can only appear for a half hour out of every hour and they spend a lot of time at every table each meal.  You want to make sure you have allotted enough time for your family to get the most out of your character dining.

Don’t schedule your character meal at a time when you will want to rush out to go to a theme park!

Bon Appetite!

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit Roller Coaster Now Open at Universal Studios Theme Park

August 30, 2009

After an extensive delay, the much anticipated Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit Roller Coaster is now open at Universal Studios Theme Park in Orlando Florida.

Scheduled to open in the Spring of 2009, the coaster has created a lot of buzz with these unique features:

  • A customizable sound track that allows you to hear the song of your choosing during the ride
  • A video of your ride, available for purchase, that includes the soundtrack you selected
  • A 167 ft. straight vertical climb
  • Stadium seating that gives every rider an unobstructed view
  • A twisting inversion where you begin the loop on the inside but are on the outside when you reach the top
  • 3,800 feet of track
  • Up to 65mph of speed
  • Unique design allows four coasters to be on the track at once, each one carrying only 12 passengers
  • Can handle over 1800 riders per hour

Universal is hailing this as “the world’s most technologically-advanced roller coaster.”  Their ads state it’s “adrenaline pumping and music thumping,” “gasping with excitement,” and “pulse-pounding flight.”  Does the ride live up to the hype?  Inquiring minds want to know!

We haven’t had a chance to try out this new ride, but if you have please leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Stay tuned–as soon as the LanceAround team has the opportunity to experience the Rockit, we’ll let you know!

Meet an Astronaut at Kennedy Space Center

August 24, 2009
Grammy LanceAround Meets the Astronaut

Grammy LanceAround Meets the Astronaut

Almost seven billion people inhabit the earth. That’s 7,000,000,000. Less than 500 of them have been to space.

One of the neatest things you can do in Orlando is the “Astronaut Encounter” at Kennedy Space Center. You have the opportunity to meet one of the unique individuals who belong to this exclusive club.

Jon A. McBride was a pilot on Space Shuttle mission STS 41-G in 1984. For 197 hours he experience 16 sunrises and sunsets every day on the shuttle Challenger. He was also scheduled to be commander of STS-61-E, but this flight was cancelled after the Challenger accident. When Young and Crippen flew the first shuttle mission in April 1981, Jon was the lead pilot in the front chase plane that guided them into a perfect landing.

Today Jon spoke at our monthly meeting for the Central Florida Vacation Rental Manager’s Association. This week he is the featured astronaut you can meet at the Kennedy Space Center. Grammy LanceAround came down from Pennsylvania to visit us. She took Number One Daughter to meet the astronaut at the CFVRMA meeting.

What question would you ask an astronaut if you had the opportunity? Our group had some fascinating questions.

Question: “Do you believe there is life out there?”

Answer: “Do you mean do I believe in ‘aliens?’ I think the only aliens I have ever seen are here on earth!”

Question: “What was the most exhilarating thing about your flight?”

Answer: “Like John Carpenter said after his Apollo flight, ‘the part between the lift off and the splashdown.'”

Question: “What was your motivation?”

Answer: “Well, we didn’t have astronauts when we were young, we had Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.”

# 1 Daughter with the Astronaught

# 1 Daughter with the Astronaut

Question: “Do you really believe Orion will be built and we will go back to the moon?”

Answer: “Yes, it’s just a question of when.”

Afterwards Number One Daughter ran up to Jon to get his picture and then had Grammy’s picture taken with him as well.

It’s the opportunity to meet people like Jon McBride that make the Kennedy Space Center one of the best attractions in the Orlando area for the well informed traveller looking for “more than a mouse.”®

Reviews of Manta Coaster at Sea World

June 22, 2009

Ride the Manta!

Ride face first on the Manta!

The monthly meeting of the Central Florida Vacation Rental Managers Association was held at Sea World to allow us to ride the new Manta coaster. We arrived at 8:00am, an hour before opening, so there were no lines. At 9am, as we went from Manta to our meeting, we fought our way through the throng of Sea World guests who arrived precisely at opening time and rushed to Manta.

Here are some reviews from my colleagues in the vacation rental home industry:

“Manta–4 G’s of sheer excitement, terror & back-against-your-seat entertainment! The last row is the best place to be!” –Michael Crandell

“I didn’t ride Manta because of a back problem but the aquarium was fantastic.”-Nigel Worrall, F. Leisure

“Finally, a line I don’t mind waiting in…getting there is half the fun. -Sondra Steele

“Manta–Awesome, fantastic and other adjectives that cannot be printed.  What more can I say? -Ian Pardoe, President CFVRMA

“I was a little too fat to ride it.  Thanks, Sea World, for giving me the motivation to lose weight!” -# 1 Son

Stingrays while you wait

Stingrays while you wait

“I didn’t ride Manta because my brother couldn’t ride it to give me some confidence, but I did go in the aquarium.  It was absolutely beautiful. Even if you don’t ride Manta, ‘there’s always a compromise.'” -# 1 Daughter

“Manta was extremely exciting and thrilling; one of those rides you must go on at least twice. The best part of the ride is the spins.” -Ashley Cobb

“I rode a roller coaster in Kansas City and when the cars reached the port–The whole ride fell to the ground. So I didn’t ride Manta” -Judy Braland

“I hated it. Don threw up, Pluto urinated on one of the support beams. There are much better coasters at Disney.” -Mick E. Mice (Not my real name)

“Breathtaking! A roller coaster like no other. A must do at Sea World!” -Steve Kliamenakis

“Manta was all the thrill seeking adventure I could imagine bottled up into one ride. -Brad L.

“Unfortunately, I was too big to fit into the Manta seats.  Why is it that I can ride every coaster at Disney, but the coaster designers at Universal, Sea World and Busch Gardens can’t figure out how to build a coaster that fits everybody? -Anonymous

“Manta–Wow! I won’t ride it but the aquariums are incredible.” -Keith Brady

“Inconceivable!” -Vizzini, the Sicilian from The Princess Bride movie

After our Manta preview, we had a talk by Brian Morrow, the director of Design & Engineering for Sea World.  He began by telling us that he was responsible for the design of everything at Sea World from “bathrooms to roller coasters.”  I was not quite sure if it was a good idea for him to put both of them in the same sentence?

Here are some of the most asked questions and facts about Manta:

How tall to ride Manta?

How tall to ride Manta?

“How tall to ride Manta Coaster?” 54 inches.

“How tall is the Manta Coaster?” 140 feet with the longest drop being 113 feet.

“How long is the Manta ride?” Just over two and a half minutes.

“How fast does Manta go?” Up to 56 miles per hour.

“How many loops, twists and spins does Manta have?” Manta speeds riders through four showcase inversions, including two in-line spins, one flat spin and one pretzel loop. But the specially crafted rails make Manta one of the world’s smoothest coasters. There are lots of other twists and turns as well.

“How many aquariums are at the beginning of the ride queue?” 10, including some that have stingrays circling overhead and one that smaller guests can “pop up” into with fish swimming all around them.

“Who manufactured the Manta coaster?” Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) of Monthey, Switzerland.

New Kim Possible Attraction at Disney World

June 5, 2009

Your mission starts here!

Your mission starts here!

When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman in 1932, the mythical citizens of Metropolis would one day look upwards and introduce him with the voiceover, “Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird…it’s a plane…no, it’s Superman.”

In 2009, a modern superhero, Kim Possible, has become the subject of the newest attraction at Disney World.  Now, theme park enthusiasts can point to this attraction and proclaim, “Look, in Disney World, it’s a new ride…it’s a new show…no, it’s…uh…it’s…uh…what the heck kind of attraction is this, anyway?”

Disney has long been known for their creative, cutting edge concepts and the Kim Possible attraction is no exception.  It is unlike any theme park attraction I have ever seen.  Which also makes it very difficult to describe.

Just a rock?

Just a rock?

The attraction is located at World Showcase in EPCOT.  World Showcase is the back half of EPCOT.  There is a large lake surrounded by 11 different “countries.”  Each country is a collection of buildings, shops, restaurants and attractions representing the culture and architecture of that country.  For example, in Japan you will find two Japanese restaurants, a pagoda, a Japanese water and meditation garden, a rock garden and several gift shops selling authentic Japanese items.

When you enter a “country” in EPCOT, the experience feels like you are really in that country.  The music you hear is from that country.  The restaurant is a copy of an identical restaurant from that country and is run by the same people.  Even all the Disney “cast members” (Disney’s term for their employees) within a country are from that country.

Seven of the eleven countries in EPCOT’s World Showcase have a Kim Possible adventure within the country.

Recruitment Station

Recruitment Station

To participate in the Kim Possible attraction, you first stop by a small cart, called a recruitment center.  There are two of them at EPCOT.   One is at the Innovations Pavilion at the front half of EPCOT.  The other is located on the Odyssey Bridge between the countries of France and United Kingdom in the World Showcase part of EPCOT.

At the cart, you are given your “Kimmunicator”–Something Disney refers to as an “interactive, handheld, cell-phone-like device using state-of-the-art technology.”  But to you it will look like an ordinary cell phone.  You also receive a piece of paper with a time and country in World Showcase where you go to begin your adventure.

Each member of your party can get their own “Kimmunicator” or everyone can enjoy the attraction with just one.  Number One Daughter received her assignment to go to the United Kingdom while Number One Son’s assignment was in Germany.  At the end of the assignment, your Kimmunicator asks if you would like another assignment.  In this way, Number One Daughter also got to pursue the evil villains in Japan.

Hunting Villians in the UK

Hunting Villians in the UK

The fancy cell phone, uh, Kimmunicator, can be activated when you arrive at your country at the prescribed time.  Here is where the attraction becomes very interesting.  The display on your Kimmunicator comes to life with a short video of Kim Possible and reveals the story line involving one of seven different villains (a different one for each country.)  You are then instructed to go to someplace that is identified within that country.  Once there, your Kimmunicator will activate something that everyone else around you assumes is only a display item.  For example, in the United Kingdom a large nutcracker soldier inside a window display comes to life and gives you important information to complete your mission.  In Japan, a large rock inside the meditation garden would magically display a Japanese Kanji Character when activated by the Kimmunicator as part of the story line to destroy the evil villain.  In the United Kingdom, one of the workers at the Tea Shoppe gives you the gift of a tea bag if you say the magic word to her, as told to you by the Kimmunicator.

Not Just a Rock!

Not Just a Rock!

There are four or five different videos for each mission which takes place in one of the participating seven countries–Each video gives you more information about your evil villain then instructions for where to go to activate the next special part of your mission.  Once completed, your evil villain is defeated, you (and Kim Possible) are victorious and your Kimmunicator gets dumped into a specific location that also appears to everyone else around you to be simply part of the ornamentation of that country.  In Germany, Number One Daughter dumped her Kimmunicator into the specified barrel sitting in the middle of the town square.

Recycling: Super-Spy Style!

Recycling: Super-Spy Style!

What made this attraction so much fun was the ability to do it in the middle of EPCOT with all the other tourists walking around you; oblivious to what you were doing.  Afterwards, it became fun to watch other people doing the attraction and knowing what they were up to while people just passed them by, assuming they were merely using their cell phones.

Our children seemed to enjoy this attraction a lot.  But what was really fun was watching families with even younger children who obviously have seen the Kim Possible TV show and who were just tickled pink to use the Kimmunicator to activate the displays.  In Japan, for example, one of the Kimmunicator instructions sent a signal to a rock in the middle of the water meditation garden and created a waterfall right in front of your eyes.  It was cool.

Even my good friend, Jedibfa, who is a long way from being a youngster, was excited when he heard about the technology necessary to create this unique attraction.  Hopefully, it won’t be long before he and his friend, Lizthefair, come to visit us in Florida to enjoy the attraction for themselves!

Manta Coaster at Sea World Rained Out :(

May 27, 2009

Orlando Thunderstorm

Weather this week in Florida

Last month I posted that my office staff was going to test ride the new Manta Coaster at Sea World on May 20th before its grand opening on May 22nd.

I promised that I would let you know what we thought of the coaster.

Unfortunately, mother nature did not cooperate.  We have had heavy rainstorms all week.  The coaster was not operating when we went to the preview.

Stay tuned and in the next couple of weeks we’ll try to get a review of the coaster, written by people who actually rode it.

In the meantime, if you have ridden the Manta, please leave a comment and let us know you thoughts.
