Ball Lightning Strikes Outside Florida Dream Homes Office

September 4, 2009 by

This has to be documented.

On Tuesday September 1st, 2009 at approximately 5:15pm a dual confirmed sighting of a Ball Lightning strike was witnessed about 50 yards directly in front of the Florida Dream Homes office at 5511 W. Irlo Bronson Hwy., Kissimmee, FL  34746.

Those are the facts.  Let’s look at the experience…

Mrs. LanceAround, # 1 Daughter and I were sitting with Anne, our Office Manager, in the Florida Dream Homes office.  # 1 daughter was doing some work for us on the computer while Anne, Mrs. LanceAround and I were discussing business.  A few moments earlier we had heard a thunder crack that was so loud we looked to see if two trucks had collided on the highway outside the office.  We were in the midst of one of those Florida torrential downpours.  The frequent lightning bolts caused Anne and Mrs. LanceAround to continually glance out the front windows.

Suddenly, there was a distinct buzz in the air.  I noticed that Mrs. LanceAround and Anne were staring out the front window with their mouths agape.  I could not see out the front, but I was fixated by a strange, wavy-blue image that flashed for well over a second on the wall above Anne’s head.

A moment later the blue image disappeared and the two women said in almost perfect unison, “Did you see that?”

Fast forward to later that night…

At home, we continued to talk about the strange phenomenon that Mrs. LanceAround witnessed earlier that evening.  # 1 daughter did a Wikipedia search on glowing lightning strikes and soon discovered this entry about “ball lightning.”  Everyone was shocked to read the line, “…until recently, ball lightning was often regarded as a fantasy or hoax,…” (Wikipedia.org’s entry on Ball lightning.)  Further reading the description left no doubt in Mrs. LanceAround’s mind–she actually witnessed the phenomenon known as “Ball lightning.”

We quickly called Anne at home and had her read the entry in Wikipedia.  “My God!” she exclaimed.

The next morning at the office, I insisted that Anne and Mrs. LanceAround record their observations of the incredible event they witnessed the evening before.  So for the lucky readers of my blog, here are two eyewitness accounts written just hours after the viewing of a such a rare event:

Anne’s Testimony:

I have been privileged to witness a rare phenomenon, ball lightning.  During a recent thunderstorm as I watched the rain come down in sheets I saw the brightest blue orb hang in the air for a couple of seconds and then it was gone.  It had to be the most spectacular and beautiful natural occurrence that I have ever witnessed.

Mrs. LanceAround’s Testimony:

I witnessed one of the most amazing sights I’ve ever seen in my entire fifty eight years.  I happened to be looking out our office windows when a thunderstorm began.  I suddenly was staring at a huge, glowing ball of fire that seemed to be continuously fed by lightning strikes.  It was suspended above the ground at the height of the electrical wires strung along the street directly in line with one of our large store front windows.  I was so stunned by the sight I couldn’t speak!  I waited for some cataclysmic explosion that never occurred.  After a few seconds there was a loud bang and the ball of fire disappeared.

And while I did not directly witness the phenomenon, here is my testimony of the event.

LanceAround’s Testimony:

I was speaking with Anne and Mrs. LanceAround when I noticed that they suddenly began to stare out the front windows with their mouth’s open and unable to speak.  I saw a swath of blue light reflecting off the wall above Anne’s head, like the shimmering shadow of reflected water.  It lasted for only a second or two.  A moment later, both Anne and Mrs. LanceAround asked aloud, “Did you see that?”  All three of us walked to the front of the store.  Anne was clearly giddy and said she wanted it to happen again.  They described to me a large, bluish orb that appeared to emanate from the bottom of a lightning strike in the front of the trees located across the highway from our storefront.  The orb was described as around six to eight feet in diameter and might have been on or near some electrical wires, a light pole or the grove of trees in that vicinity.  It appeared to hover about 10 to 20 feet off the ground and lasted for a couple of seconds–much longer than a lightning strike lasts.  The orb shimmered and appeared to have pulsating lightning-like streaks within itself.

Ball Lightning, hoax or reality?  Fact or fiction?  The definitive answer is:  Ball lightning is a REAL phenomenon.  Mrs. LanceAround and Anne have SEEN it and have TESTIFIED that it exists.  Now the readers of my blog can speak with authority and confidence–There IS such a thing as ball lightning and it is WONDROUS!

Orlando’s Best Kept Secret I–Fantasy of Flight

Fantasy of Flight--Orlando's Best Kept Secret!

Fantasy of Flight--Orlando's Best Kept Secret!

Today we introduce a new heading, “Orlando’s Best Kept Secrets.”  These will be posts that focus on places that are relatively unknown but absolutely worth a look-see.

The first one actually won the Orlando Sentinel’s award as the “Best Kept Secret” for the last two years:  Fantasy of Flight.

This small, half day attraction located just a half hour down I-4 from Disney World,  is the vision of Gold Medal World Aerobatic Champion, Kermit Weeks. His fascination with flying and an unexpected inheritance enabled him to acquire the largest collection of vintage aircraft in the world.

The attraction begins with an immersion experience where you walk through several areas that utilize multimedia displays to give you the feel of being in the middle of the action during early flight attempts up to WWII. This culminates with the opportunity to walk through an authentic B-17 Bomber as if you were on an actual WWII flying mission.

After this experience, you enter the airplane hangers where there are over 40 vintage airplanes, most restored to their original flying condition. You can board a Short Sunderland, have a close encounter with the only B-26 Marauder that still flies, get up close to a B-24 Liberator, a Curtiss TP40 and two P51 Mustangs.

I am not very familiar with the field of aviation. But I can tell you that just walking around these aircraft and reading the informational displays was a real thrill.

Ford Tri-motor

Ford Tri-motor

Of course, being a movie buff, I gravitated to the Ford Trimotor–The actual plane that was featured in the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!

Beyond the hangers are rooms where you can watch genuine craftsmen restoring vintage aircraft.

Flight Simulator

Flight Simulator

Flight simulation machines, balloon and hang glider simulations, multimedia displays in tribute to aviation pioneers and much more can be found in this one of a kind attraction.

By now, you are ready to take a break in the art deco Compass Rose restaurant glimmering with the bright silver decor and serving food reminicenst of a 30’s diner. But you are not done yet!

There are behind the scenes tram tours, vintage aircraft flights and the opportunity to fly in Waldo Wright’s biplane. (There will be a separate post about this!) You can even schedule an early morning balloon ride.

While the biplane, balloon ride and some simulators have an extra fee, the main attraction is less than $30 for adults and $15 for children.

Landing a balloon is not as easy as you think!

Landing a balloon is not as easy as you think!

Unlike theme parks that charge “adult” prices for 10 year olds, Fantasy of Flight charges youth rates from 5 to 15 year olds and allows those under 5 to get in for free.

Fantasy of Flight is hands down Orlando’s “Best Kept Secret” but it does not deserve this designation. I hope the well informed readers of my blog will spread the word and give this attraction the recognition (and business) it has earned!

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit Roller Coaster Now Open at Universal Studios Theme Park

August 30, 2009 by

After an extensive delay, the much anticipated Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit Roller Coaster is now open at Universal Studios Theme Park in Orlando Florida.

Scheduled to open in the Spring of 2009, the coaster has created a lot of buzz with these unique features:

  • A customizable sound track that allows you to hear the song of your choosing during the ride
  • A video of your ride, available for purchase, that includes the soundtrack you selected
  • A 167 ft. straight vertical climb
  • Stadium seating that gives every rider an unobstructed view
  • A twisting inversion where you begin the loop on the inside but are on the outside when you reach the top
  • 3,800 feet of track
  • Up to 65mph of speed
  • Unique design allows four coasters to be on the track at once, each one carrying only 12 passengers
  • Can handle over 1800 riders per hour

Universal is hailing this as “the world’s most technologically-advanced roller coaster.”  Their ads state it’s “adrenaline pumping and music thumping,” “gasping with excitement,” and “pulse-pounding flight.”  Does the ride live up to the hype?  Inquiring minds want to know!

We haven’t had a chance to try out this new ride, but if you have please leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Stay tuned–as soon as the LanceAround team has the opportunity to experience the Rockit, we’ll let you know!

Meet an Astronaut at Kennedy Space Center

Grammy LanceAround Meets the Astronaut

Grammy LanceAround Meets the Astronaut

Almost seven billion people inhabit the earth. That’s 7,000,000,000. Less than 500 of them have been to space.

One of the neatest things you can do in Orlando is the “Astronaut Encounter” at Kennedy Space Center. You have the opportunity to meet one of the unique individuals who belong to this exclusive club.

Jon A. McBride was a pilot on Space Shuttle mission STS 41-G in 1984. For 197 hours he experience 16 sunrises and sunsets every day on the shuttle Challenger. He was also scheduled to be commander of STS-61-E, but this flight was cancelled after the Challenger accident. When Young and Crippen flew the first shuttle mission in April 1981, Jon was the lead pilot in the front chase plane that guided them into a perfect landing.

Today Jon spoke at our monthly meeting for the Central Florida Vacation Rental Manager’s Association. This week he is the featured astronaut you can meet at the Kennedy Space Center. Grammy LanceAround came down from Pennsylvania to visit us. She took Number One Daughter to meet the astronaut at the CFVRMA meeting.

What question would you ask an astronaut if you had the opportunity? Our group had some fascinating questions.

Question: “Do you believe there is life out there?”

Answer: “Do you mean do I believe in ‘aliens?’ I think the only aliens I have ever seen are here on earth!”

Question: “What was the most exhilarating thing about your flight?”

Answer: “Like John Carpenter said after his Apollo flight, ‘the part between the lift off and the splashdown.'”

Question: “What was your motivation?”

Answer: “Well, we didn’t have astronauts when we were young, we had Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.”

# 1 Daughter with the Astronaught

# 1 Daughter with the Astronaut

Question: “Do you really believe Orion will be built and we will go back to the moon?”

Answer: “Yes, it’s just a question of when.”

Afterwards Number One Daughter ran up to Jon to get his picture and then had Grammy’s picture taken with him as well.

It’s the opportunity to meet people like Jon McBride that make the Kennedy Space Center one of the best attractions in the Orlando area for the well informed traveller looking for “more than a mouse.”®

African Ethiopian Restaurant in Orlando

August 17, 2009 by
Service--Ethiopian Style!
Service–Ethiopian Style!

Unexpected adventures provide some of the most serendipitous memories of our lives, don’t they?

When our daughter took us on vacation to San Francisco, we had one of those moments when we discovered the Massawa Ethiopian Restaurant in the heart of the Haight-Ashbury district. Delicious food–unlike any other food I had ever experienced–was served on a large round plate in the center of our table. The different dishes were clumped beside each other on a flat, spongy piece of injera–Ethiopian bread at least two feet in diameter and completely covering the plate.

We ate the food with our fingers, occasionally spinning the plate so we could each try the various fare. The bread had a vinegar-y taste, like sourdough, and the dishes ranged from lentils to cabbage to green beans to split peas. Each one having a unique flavor, difficult to describe but enjoyable to experience.

This memory came to mind as Mrs. LanceAround and I, along with our three offspring, were driving down International Drive last week. This road is reminiscent of the Las Vegas strip–lots of flashing signs, tourist attractions, restaurants, hotels–everything but the casinos. Mrs. LanceAround’s sharp eyes caught a sign proclaiming “Ethiopian Cuisine.”

Tucked away in the midst of all the tourist trappings is a small, hidden plaza which houses the Nile Ethiopian Restaurant. We arrived around 10pm on Saturday and met Ermias & Ababa Gebremedhin, the owners. They came to Washington D.C. from Ethiopia about 12 years ago. In 2007, they moved to Orlando and opened up the Nile Restaurant. Ermias was a soccer player in Ethiopia and neither he nor his wife, Ababa, had any restaurant experience.

Ermias Gebremedhin Serves Us Ethiopian Coffee

Ermias Proudly Serves Ethiopian Coffee

When I asked Ermias why he left Ethiopia, he replied, “Ethiopia doesn’t give you a chance.” He enjoys the freedom and opportunity that are present in this country. He says his wife “pushed me” to open the restaurant. He quickly credits her with their success, stating that she is the one who can cook.

We enjoyed the decor of the Nile; a mixture of standard tables and chairs along with round African stools–shaped like large drums–With an even larger and taller drum-shaped table. The food is served on a single, large plate placed in a woven basket with a woven lid that has a large, slightly curved handle similar to the shape of the stem on top of a pumpkin.

One taste of the food and we were immediately transported back to our memory of that first Ethiopian meal we experienced in San Francisco. It was unique and bursting with flavor.

Mrs. LanceAround does not like sourdough bread, so she was not crazy about the injera or the collard greens. But she heartily enjoyed the lentils, yellow split peas and green beans. # 1 Daughter is a bit finicky and did not eat much. No worries, the three LanceAround males scarfed up everything else. A unique treat that made for a great adventure.

Give the Nile Ethiopian Restaurant a try. Expand your horizons! You might just discover something…serendipitous!

Best Ice Cream in Orlando

Tropical Delight Homemade Ice Cream

Driving down highway 192 about 5 miles east of Disney World, Mrs. LanceAround and I are suddenly blinded by a small, hot pink building with yellow trim. But what really catches my eye is the sign saying, “Homemade Ice Cream.”

Inside we meet Noelia Scharon, owner of Tropical Delight Homemade Ice Cream.  Noelia just moved here from Kennett Square, PA where a magazine proclaimed her ice cream as the “Best of Philadelphia 2009.” She explains that she had to get out of the cold weather, so she moved to the Disney area.

Some of you may recognize Kennett Square, PA as the “mushroom capital of the world.” And, yes, in addition to the common flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, Noelia makes a mushroom flavored ice cream! She also makes avocado, tamarind, rice pudding and a sweet corn enhanced with chili powder.

I buy a scoop of toasted coconut and a scoop of peanut butter. Mrs. LanceAround gets one scoop of her favorite–pistachio. The charge is only $5 for both. The ice cream is primo–sweet, creamy and delicious.

Noelia displays a fresh tamarind

Noelia shows Mrs. LanceAround a fresh tamarind

We are about to leave when Noelia talks about how she makes everything from scratch. She holds up a tamarind and some limes and proudly shows her ice cream machine from Mexico.  I can’t resist anymore, so I get a quart of rice pudding and a mango sorbet pop for vegan # 2 son. Noelia throws in another quart of pistachio for Mrs. LanceAround at no charge.

I pay another $9.25 and prepare to leave.

“Do you have a plastic spoon?” Noelia asks.

“I have a spoon.” I reply.

“Is it plastic?” she asks again. I give her a quizzical look. “Metal spoons affect the taste of the ice cream.” she offers.

“Even stainless steel spoons? asks Mrs. LanceAround?

Noelia nods her head and I say, “You are a true ice cream aficionado!” with a smile on my face.

Top 10 Posts of the Year

# 1 son finds "The Spot" while Geohashing--Check out "Seeking Nothing in the Middle of Nowhere"

Wow, has it been a year already since we began this experience of “social networking?”

It has been so rewarding to see the number of friends reading this blog climb every month. I thought this would be a good time to review my personal top 10 posts from our first year together:

1. Spiritual Renewal During Vacation–This post speaks of something very close to my heart. I hope you enjoy it.

2. Seeking Nothing in the Middle of Nowhere–I am as surprised as anyone to find this so high on my top ten list; especially since it does not have anything to do with Orlando (necessarily.) It was just such a serendipitous experience that is so well captured in this post that is has become one of my favorites.

3. Kennedy Space Center–Of all the major attractions in the Orlando Area, this is the one I would not want to miss. Yet most tourists do not even visit it. Pity.

4. Auditioning for American Idol–Okay, I confess, I don’t know if this post is my favorite because it is so good or because it was written by # 1 Daughter. Perhaps both (I hope!)

5. Orlando On a Shoestring–In these uncertain economic times, it’s nice to know that families can still have a great vacation without having to spend a lot of money.

6. Maitland Art Center–This phenomenal place caught me by surprise. If you love art, you don’t want to miss this place.

7. Robert is Here–Guaranteed to be the only post in the universe that compares shopping at Harrods in London to shopping at a fruit stand near Everglades National Park. Yea, my mind just kinda works that way…

8. Taxi Cabs in Orlando–This is a heartwarming story of a company that chooses to do the right thing even when they don’t have to.

9. La Nouba–This show in Downtown Disney always touches me so I tried to write a post that would touch you. It is not as good as the actual La Nouba show, but it comes from the heart.

10. Where is Central Florida–This collection of eclectic thoughts is a metaphysical fugue on the meaning of place. Not really. But it probably gives you more insight into how my mind works than helping you understand where Central Florida is. Yet for some reason, I really like this post.

Need a Taxi Cab Company in Orlando?

July 18, 2009 by

Taxi!

"Taxi!"

Need a taxi in Orlando?  Call 407.422.2222 to use one of the taxis run by Mears Transportation Group.

Wait a minute–This blog does not accept advertisements or paid endorsements.  So why is LanceAround touting a Taxi company?

I’m glad you asked.

About a month ago I was driving to the Florida Dream Homes office.  There was a Taxi Van on my right.  I was in his blind spot when he made a sudden lane change.  Instinctively, I swerved left avoiding a collision but hitting a huge hole in the side of the road that bent my tire axle.

The noise of my tire hitting the hole was so loud, the cab driver stopped, thinking he struck my car.  He was very nice.  We called the police but were told that since the cars did not touch, there was no accident and he could not write a report–Unless it was to cite me for driving off the road.  He was not helpful!

I took my car to the shop–$540.74.  I was bummed.

I decided to write a letter to the Mears Transportation Group.  Mrs. LanceAround told me not to waste my time.  Even though I was pretty sure no good would come of it, I felt better getting it off my chest.

Imagine our shock when we got a phone call from Mears just a few weeks later letting us know that a check was on the way to cover the full cost of the damages.

I asked the person from Mears why they did this when they were under no obligation to do so.  He explained that Mears is a family owned company, founded by Paul Mears Sr. in 1939.  To them, community is very important, as is integrity.

I was impressed.  I decided that from now on, my business is going to recommend Mears for anyone who needs transportation.  I phoned the company and spoke to Bret who is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  Like everyone I had dealt with at Mears, he was very nice.  When I told him I was going to blog about Mears, I asked him what the name of their Taxi Cab division is.  Turns out they have five:  Yellow Cab, Yellow Cab of Winter Park, Checker Cab, City Cab and Safety Cab.

Bret went on to explain that different municipalities, cities and airports have different permitting requirements–Hence the need for different cab companies.  A City Cab, for example, is not permitted to stage at the airport looking for a rider.

Bret also mentioned that in addition to Taxis, Mears has luxury sedans, stretch limos, SUVs, shuttle vans and motor coaches.  These groups do both scheduled and charter service for the entire Greater Orlando Area, including hotels, convention centers, airports, attractions, businesses and so forth.

I asked Bret what distinguishes Mears from other taxi companies.  He said that in addition to the huge variety of products they offer, they have a very thorough driver training program that not only educates the driver in how to interact with the customer it also helps the driver succeed as an independent business person.

The Mears Transportation Group website is simple to navigate and gives wonderful information about the founding and philosophy of the Mears Transportation Group company.

For me, I was so impressed that the company lived up to its philosophy of customer service and integrity that I have become a dedicated Mears customer and will refer all my vacation rental home guests to them as well!  So if you need a cab, call 407.422.2222.  For any other transportation need, call 407.422.4561 and someone in the Mears office will direct you to someone who can help.

Reviews of Manta Coaster at Sea World

Ride the Manta!

Ride face first on the Manta!

The monthly meeting of the Central Florida Vacation Rental Managers Association was held at Sea World to allow us to ride the new Manta coaster. We arrived at 8:00am, an hour before opening, so there were no lines. At 9am, as we went from Manta to our meeting, we fought our way through the throng of Sea World guests who arrived precisely at opening time and rushed to Manta.

Here are some reviews from my colleagues in the vacation rental home industry:

“Manta–4 G’s of sheer excitement, terror & back-against-your-seat entertainment! The last row is the best place to be!” –Michael Crandell

“I didn’t ride Manta because of a back problem but the aquarium was fantastic.”-Nigel Worrall, F. Leisure

“Finally, a line I don’t mind waiting in…getting there is half the fun. -Sondra Steele

“Manta–Awesome, fantastic and other adjectives that cannot be printed.  What more can I say? -Ian Pardoe, President CFVRMA

“I was a little too fat to ride it.  Thanks, Sea World, for giving me the motivation to lose weight!” -# 1 Son

Stingrays while you wait

Stingrays while you wait

“I didn’t ride Manta because my brother couldn’t ride it to give me some confidence, but I did go in the aquarium.  It was absolutely beautiful. Even if you don’t ride Manta, ‘there’s always a compromise.'” -# 1 Daughter

“Manta was extremely exciting and thrilling; one of those rides you must go on at least twice. The best part of the ride is the spins.” -Ashley Cobb

“I rode a roller coaster in Kansas City and when the cars reached the port–The whole ride fell to the ground. So I didn’t ride Manta” -Judy Braland

“I hated it. Don threw up, Pluto urinated on one of the support beams. There are much better coasters at Disney.” -Mick E. Mice (Not my real name)

“Breathtaking! A roller coaster like no other. A must do at Sea World!” -Steve Kliamenakis

“Manta was all the thrill seeking adventure I could imagine bottled up into one ride. -Brad L.

“Unfortunately, I was too big to fit into the Manta seats.  Why is it that I can ride every coaster at Disney, but the coaster designers at Universal, Sea World and Busch Gardens can’t figure out how to build a coaster that fits everybody? -Anonymous

“Manta–Wow! I won’t ride it but the aquariums are incredible.” -Keith Brady

“Inconceivable!” -Vizzini, the Sicilian from The Princess Bride movie

After our Manta preview, we had a talk by Brian Morrow, the director of Design & Engineering for Sea World.  He began by telling us that he was responsible for the design of everything at Sea World from “bathrooms to roller coasters.”  I was not quite sure if it was a good idea for him to put both of them in the same sentence?

Here are some of the most asked questions and facts about Manta:

How tall to ride Manta?

How tall to ride Manta?

“How tall to ride Manta Coaster?” 54 inches.

“How tall is the Manta Coaster?” 140 feet with the longest drop being 113 feet.

“How long is the Manta ride?” Just over two and a half minutes.

“How fast does Manta go?” Up to 56 miles per hour.

“How many loops, twists and spins does Manta have?” Manta speeds riders through four showcase inversions, including two in-line spins, one flat spin and one pretzel loop. But the specially crafted rails make Manta one of the world’s smoothest coasters. There are lots of other twists and turns as well.

“How many aquariums are at the beginning of the ride queue?” 10, including some that have stingrays circling overhead and one that smaller guests can “pop up” into with fish swimming all around them.

“Who manufactured the Manta coaster?” Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) of Monthey, Switzerland.

New Kim Possible Attraction at Disney World

June 5, 2009 by

Your mission starts here!

Your mission starts here!

When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman in 1932, the mythical citizens of Metropolis would one day look upwards and introduce him with the voiceover, “Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird…it’s a plane…no, it’s Superman.”

In 2009, a modern superhero, Kim Possible, has become the subject of the newest attraction at Disney World.  Now, theme park enthusiasts can point to this attraction and proclaim, “Look, in Disney World, it’s a new ride…it’s a new show…no, it’s…uh…it’s…uh…what the heck kind of attraction is this, anyway?”

Disney has long been known for their creative, cutting edge concepts and the Kim Possible attraction is no exception.  It is unlike any theme park attraction I have ever seen.  Which also makes it very difficult to describe.

Just a rock?

Just a rock?

The attraction is located at World Showcase in EPCOT.  World Showcase is the back half of EPCOT.  There is a large lake surrounded by 11 different “countries.”  Each country is a collection of buildings, shops, restaurants and attractions representing the culture and architecture of that country.  For example, in Japan you will find two Japanese restaurants, a pagoda, a Japanese water and meditation garden, a rock garden and several gift shops selling authentic Japanese items.

When you enter a “country” in EPCOT, the experience feels like you are really in that country.  The music you hear is from that country.  The restaurant is a copy of an identical restaurant from that country and is run by the same people.  Even all the Disney “cast members” (Disney’s term for their employees) within a country are from that country.

Seven of the eleven countries in EPCOT’s World Showcase have a Kim Possible adventure within the country.

Recruitment Station

Recruitment Station

To participate in the Kim Possible attraction, you first stop by a small cart, called a recruitment center.  There are two of them at EPCOT.   One is at the Innovations Pavilion at the front half of EPCOT.  The other is located on the Odyssey Bridge between the countries of France and United Kingdom in the World Showcase part of EPCOT.

At the cart, you are given your “Kimmunicator”–Something Disney refers to as an “interactive, handheld, cell-phone-like device using state-of-the-art technology.”  But to you it will look like an ordinary cell phone.  You also receive a piece of paper with a time and country in World Showcase where you go to begin your adventure.

Each member of your party can get their own “Kimmunicator” or everyone can enjoy the attraction with just one.  Number One Daughter received her assignment to go to the United Kingdom while Number One Son’s assignment was in Germany.  At the end of the assignment, your Kimmunicator asks if you would like another assignment.  In this way, Number One Daughter also got to pursue the evil villains in Japan.

Hunting Villians in the UK

Hunting Villians in the UK

The fancy cell phone, uh, Kimmunicator, can be activated when you arrive at your country at the prescribed time.  Here is where the attraction becomes very interesting.  The display on your Kimmunicator comes to life with a short video of Kim Possible and reveals the story line involving one of seven different villains (a different one for each country.)  You are then instructed to go to someplace that is identified within that country.  Once there, your Kimmunicator will activate something that everyone else around you assumes is only a display item.  For example, in the United Kingdom a large nutcracker soldier inside a window display comes to life and gives you important information to complete your mission.  In Japan, a large rock inside the meditation garden would magically display a Japanese Kanji Character when activated by the Kimmunicator as part of the story line to destroy the evil villain.  In the United Kingdom, one of the workers at the Tea Shoppe gives you the gift of a tea bag if you say the magic word to her, as told to you by the Kimmunicator.

Not Just a Rock!

Not Just a Rock!

There are four or five different videos for each mission which takes place in one of the participating seven countries–Each video gives you more information about your evil villain then instructions for where to go to activate the next special part of your mission.  Once completed, your evil villain is defeated, you (and Kim Possible) are victorious and your Kimmunicator gets dumped into a specific location that also appears to everyone else around you to be simply part of the ornamentation of that country.  In Germany, Number One Daughter dumped her Kimmunicator into the specified barrel sitting in the middle of the town square.

Recycling: Super-Spy Style!

Recycling: Super-Spy Style!

What made this attraction so much fun was the ability to do it in the middle of EPCOT with all the other tourists walking around you; oblivious to what you were doing.  Afterwards, it became fun to watch other people doing the attraction and knowing what they were up to while people just passed them by, assuming they were merely using their cell phones.

Our children seemed to enjoy this attraction a lot.  But what was really fun was watching families with even younger children who obviously have seen the Kim Possible TV show and who were just tickled pink to use the Kimmunicator to activate the displays.  In Japan, for example, one of the Kimmunicator instructions sent a signal to a rock in the middle of the water meditation garden and created a waterfall right in front of your eyes.  It was cool.

Even my good friend, Jedibfa, who is a long way from being a youngster, was excited when he heard about the technology necessary to create this unique attraction.  Hopefully, it won’t be long before he and his friend, Lizthefair, come to visit us in Florida to enjoy the attraction for themselves!
