Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is Perfect for the Youngsters

[Guest Blog Post–Number One Daughter is only 15 years old. Mrs. LanceAround and I are navigating through the treacherous waters of watching our “baby” as she experiences her first serious relationship. Using two free tickets provided to us by Disney, she invited her new beau to Mickey’s Halloween Party. While there are many Halloween venues in Orlando that attempt to outdo each other in fright, Mickey’s is a playful romp geared towards a younger, less thrill-seeking audience. It’s also one of the few that allow you to wear a costume. Here is Number One Daughter’s review–LanceAround]

By Number One Daughter

Number One Daughter and Number One Boyfriend went to Magic Kingdom on Friday from 7 pm to 12 am for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. This event is held every September through early November for children of all ages to come in costume and enjoy everything from trick-or-treating to character encounters. Most rides are also open and some have added features specifically for this party.

#1 Daughter & #1 Boyfriend

As the young couple walked into the park, they noticed the lighting and fog machines turning Disney’s Magic Kingdom into a mysterious and spooky place. The added effects were a wonderful change from the repetitious way Disney stays during the normal months of the year. As Number One Daughter got closer to the park, she heard beautifully haunting music interchanged between silly Halloween songs in a surprisingly cheerful mix of childishly-dark entertainment.

During this affair many people – of all ages – dress to impress for Halloween; from little princesses and Power Rangers to movie characters such as Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, The Joker and many more. It is a choice to come in costume. Number One Daughter was delighted to see that many of the guests had dressed up for the occasion as she had also come to the party dressed as a Japanese School Girl with a Vampire Escort.

Luckily for all teenagers in the world, the rides were still available to the public. Though Number One Daughter and Number One Boyfriend only rode the Haunted Mansion, it was obvious that this was the most popular ride judging by the wait lines on other rides. However, the rides were obviously not used to being ridden after regular Disney hours because of the constant rate they broke down. Though that kept the lines waiting for a bit, there was some extra help in passing the time. Disney had hired help to keep the lines entertained. For example, there was a woman dressed as a ghost telling witty jokes and interacting with the visitors waiting. She helped make the time pass much more quickly.

The costumes and rides were not the only great things about Mickey’s little Halloween party. The kids can go through mazes, play games and enjoy other tasks to receive candy. Number One Daughter and Number One Boyfriend did not ask to see if adults are excluded as the treating tasks were definitely geared towards the little ones. There are many places where youngsters may trick-or-treat, throughout the park. There was also a parade filled with all of Disney’s favorite characters from Winnie the Pooh to Captain Jack Sparrow.

Every few hours during this spectacular event fireworks would spontaneously go off, filling the dark sky with brilliant explosions of color and sound and leaving the night magical and wondrous.

Number One Daughter and Number One Boyfriend can honestly say that Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party deserves 6 stars out of 5.

Sea World Welcomes a New Member to the Family

This weekend Katina at Sea World welcomed a new baby.

At seven feet long and 350 pounds, this is no ordinary baby. It is the 16th killer whale calf born at Sea World, Orlando and the 27th one at all of Sea World’s parks.

Katina’s trainer says Katina is an experienced mom and appears to be bonding quickly with her baby.  She calls the baby “a miniature replica of Shamu.”

The baby’s name has not been announced.

Flea Market Near Disney World

Grandpa Could Never Drive Past A Place Like This

Grandpa LanceAround, my father,  has passed on. I miss him very much. Today would have been his 79th birthday.

On Saturday, I thought about Grandpa a lot. We were shopping for some old items to create a Harry Potter room in one of our vacation rental homes.  We discovered the 192 Flea Market on Hwy. 192 less than five miles from Disney World. My father would have loved this place.

A Huge Garage Sale Every Weekend

Grandpa could never drive past a flea market or a garage sale. When I was 12, Grammy & Grandpa bought a house in the middle of Souderton, PA. I suspect they chose this particular home because in the back was a huge, old barn. The home was constructed in 1913 and the barn was originally used by the Dorn family who were blacksmiths. But Grandpa LanceAround would use it to store his ever growing catalogue of things he purchased at every yard sale or flea market he could never drive past.

Although undiagnosed, I know that Grandpa had OCD. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone from your family is like him.

Everything Under The Sun

Now, you can find reality TV shows that specialize in showing how OCD can affect families.  For us, it was just a natural part of our lives knowing that every nook and cranny in our home and barn would quickly fill up with unknown treasures, no matter how many times we tried to clean them out.

These were the thoughts that ran through my mind as I walked past the 400 dealer booths at the 192 Flea Market. The booths were filled with everything you would expect to find at a huge flea market. In addition, there were things indiginous to our corner of the world–like Disney souvenirs, Florida T-shirts, luggage and so forth.

I did not know that when Grandpa would come to visit the LanceAround family in Florida, he would take the children to this Flea Market. Number One Son told me about it as we visited the flea market this Saturday.

We bought some uniquely shaped small “potion” bottles for a couple of quarters from a young girl who was manning the booth for her parents. I gave her a dollar tip as I reminisced about the time when I was young and I had to sit at my father’s booth at a flea market while dad tried to supplement his income. It didn’t work out too well because dad would often buy more from the other flea market vendors then he would sell!

I used to really hate being dragged to that flea market every weekend when I was younger. Now, tears come to my eyes and there’s a lump in my throat as I realize that I would give anything, ANYTHING, to be able to sit with my father at a flea market for just one more day.

I love you dad!

Going To School Using Skype While On Vacation

September 17, 2010 by

#1 Daughter Uses Skype To Do Schoolwork While In The Hotel Room

I own a vacation rental home company because I love helping guests have the vacation of a lifetime.

I’m also a big fan of vacationing during the off season when rates are lower, service is more personalized, crowds are sparser and you can get so much more for your money.

Since Orlando is such a family friendly vacation spot, one of the biggest concerns guests express about an off season vacation is taking their kids out of school. They’re afraid their child will miss too much schoolwork.

I decided to put that theory to the test.

When I planned a vacation to Washington D.C. to watch my beloved VT Hokies play Boise State on Labor Day, I made a special arrangement with the teachers at Number One Daughter’s Montessori School. We set up a Skype account so Number One Daughter could join her classroom each morning as well as do all her teacher and classroom interactions online.

Skyping With Her Classmates

Every day Number One Daughter would Skype into her Montessori School at 8:30am to join her classroom’s morning meeting and get her assignments. She would then spend the day doing a mix of schoolwork and vacationing. Her teachers even designed some activities that were specifically related to the Washington D.C. area so there would be a seamless correlation between the vacation she was having and the opportunity to further her education.

Here’s a video of Number One Daughter Skyping with Montessori Teacher Rebecca and her classroom to discuss the literature assignment for the day. I think you’ll agree it proves that a dedicated school teacher and a motivated student can successfully use modern technology to achieve academic enrichment while enjoying the benefits of vacationing during the best value season!

Lanier’s Historic Downtown Marketplace

In The Heart Of Old Downtown Kissimmee, This Place Is A Great Find!

18,000 square feet crammed packed FILLED from floor to ceiling with antiques, collectibles, design ideas and everything in between–welcome to Lanier’s Historic Downtown Marketplace located on Broadway in the heart of old town Kissimmee.

Packed From Floor To Ceiling

For the lucky readers of my blog seeking “more than a mouse”™ and an off-the-beaten-path adventure, you’re in for a real treat. Lanier’s is not simply an antique store. It is an oasis of southern hospitality. (you might be invited to have a coffee or lemonade by the store owners.) It’s a maze of amazing design ideas. It’s packed with a prestigious cornucopia of creativity. In short, it’s a shopper’s dream and an historian’s treasure!

Jeremy Exudes Southern Hospitality

Jeremy had no idea who the LanceAround family is or that they would converge upon him on a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon. His warm smile, sincere greeting and offer of coffee made one instantly like him. He is the manager and member of the original Lanier family. We explained that we were looking for some items resembling Hogwarts for a Harry Potter bedroom we were creating in one of our vacation rental homes

Sitting next to Jeremy was Myles Edwards, a professional designer who, Jeremy says, makes Lanier’s shop windows rival Bloomingdale’s every Christmas. They put their heads together and soon Jeremy was whisking us around his store finding troves of Potter-esque items.

#1 Daughter Discovered Lots of Treasures

There was so much to see even someone who dislikes shopping as much as I do found tons of amusing items that captured my attention and imagination. We spent over $100 on various items, not only for our vacation rental home but also for Number One Daughter who discovered a four player chess set she just had to have.

Meanwhile, Number One Son was still debating on which of the multitude of ancient chests and antique desks he found would work best in the Harry Potter room. Mrs. LanceAround and I smiled as we enjoyed watching how much our children enjoyed this one-of-a-kind place.

It was like we had discovered our very own hidden treasure–and now you can too!

Is NYPD The Best Pizza In Orlando?

September 3, 2010 by

NYPD Pizzeria Voted Best In Orlando

Number One Daughter got her driving permit on Friday.  To celebrate, she wanted pizza and elected to try NYPD Pizzeria and Delicatessen which had won some local Best Pizza of the Year awards.

I spent many years working in the pizza industry. I get nervous whenever I do an unannounced review of a restaurant. I understand that even the best establishments can have an off day. When I do my reviews, I try to look deeper than the surface. I look for systems, talk to patrons, observe the crew and study the procedures. Does anything indicate that tonight is different than usual?

But this visit, I didn’t have to worry about that.

From the moment we pulled up to the NYPD Pizzeria, located on Universal Drive right near the convention center, it was obvious we were at a restaurant worthy of a Best in Orlando award.

The restaurant was doing a bustling business; phones were ringing, tables were crowded and the kitchen crew and wait staff were scurrying back and forth.

#1 Daughter Digs In

I looked at the tables full of people. They were all smiling, gesturing and talking in an animated way. On the center of most tables was a round metal plate set on a pedestal about 8 inches off the table and filled with pizza that looked expertly cooked with generous portions of toppings and cheese. Some tables (that did not have a pizza in the center) were being served with plates filled with calzones, sandwiches or pasta all of which appeared to be cooked just right.

The wait staff was hustling, but not harassed. They appeared friendly, but not overbearing. The kitchen had a half dozen team members each focused on their work. No one looked bored or annoyed. The atmosphere was pleasant.

I looked around the shop. It was obviously a new store. Even so, the walls, tables, counters and baseboards seemed clean. There were firefighter helmets and amusing signs that carried themes of New York’s Finest. Walls with accent paint, a granite countertop and dark wood molding said that someone had created this shop with care and attention to detail.

Our waitress, Ashley, was cheerful and attentive. It was a busy night so she had to hustle and she did so while not being rude or pushy. She tried to give us a few minutes to purview the menu while she attended to some pressing duties. However, when we told her we were ready to order immediately (we had a movie deadline, but we didn’t tell her that) she dropped her other duties and instantly gave us her full attention.

Toasted Just Right

Number One Daughter ordered a Bayside Bianca (white pizza), I ordered an eggplant parmsean sandwich, Number One Son got got linguine with sauce and Mrs. LanceAround shared my sandwich with a slice of Number One Daughter’s Bianca and a salad. The food did not take long to arrive–but it was long enough to indicate that it was freshly prepared. It was cooked to perfection, not over- or under-done. The crust was slightly crunchy and chewy on the outside yet moist and tender on the inside. The eggplant parmesan was on an italian roll that was toasted just right.

At the front of the kitchen, you could watch the chef hand tossing the fresh pizza dough and putting the completed pies into a large oven. It appeared to bake on a revolving stone surface, but I did not get enough of a glimpse of the oven to know for sure.

We were all smiles as we tasted each other’s fare. When our waitress, Ashley, asked why were taking so many photos, she displayed the usual nervous concern when learning we were preparing to write a post about the meal. Since we never reveal whether a review will be positive or negative, we could not alleviate her anxiety. She had nothing to worry about. It was obvious from before we even sat at her table that she is a caring, conscientious waitress who works very hard.

We gave her a good tip and went on to watch our movie–full, delicious and content. Good meal at a good price.

And lucky for our readers, there are currently five NYPD Pizza and Delicatessen Restaurants throughout the greater Orlando area. Here’s the contact info for the one we went to:

Orlando Haircut That Transforms–Alchemy!

Alchemy--The Best Hair Salon In Orlando

“Alchemy…an acient practice focused on the attempt to change base metals into gold,” say Wikipedia. Can the transformative properties of alchemy also apply to your hair?

The lucky readers of my blog can check it out for themselves at a hair salon called Alchemy located on Edgewater drive in the College Park area of Orlando.  This is a place to attain “the shiniest, softest, healthiest and most stylish hair.” Visiting their website will give you an idea of just how far out and creative this place is.

What's In Store?

We discovered Alchemy when Number One daughter went with Mrs. LanceAround and I to the farmer’s market in college park. Across the street was a small, yellowish shop with the large word “Alchemy” over the door and a beautiful arrangement of plants in front. We weren’t sure if it was a clothing store, curio shop or antique place. Number One Daughter went to investigate.

She opens the front door and says, “Wow!”

Inside was the most unusually decorated hair salon she had ever seen. Large free form mirrors adorn the walls in front of cushy salon chairs. A thermos of coffee and/or hot tea at the reception area communicates that this is a place to relax and, uh, let your hair down. A disc jokey in the back pumps a continuous selection of relaxing contemporary music into the salon.

Michael Arranges the Hair

Michael is a junior stylist and an apprentice. He is busy cutting hair. Cutting? No, wait, it’s more like…how to describe it?  At the next chair is Corinne Gammichia, the creator and owner of Alchemy. She is teaching a team of stylists. As she lifts and releases the hair of the person in the chair, Mrs. LanceAround remarks that it looks like she is doing a flower arrangement.

That’s it! They don’t cut hair at Alchemy–they arrange your hair in the most creative and artist fashion using cutting edge (pun intended) hair styling techniques.

Michael explains that he has been with Alchemy for four and a half years, yet he is only a junior stylist and an apprentice. He looks forward to completing his apprenticeship and becoming a senior stylist. Not that this matters–the education never ends at Alchemy, he explains. They are constantly being sent to the latest hair styling conventions to learn the most up to date techniques and bring them back to the shop to teach the other stylists.

Have Some Coffee or Tea & Relax

Mrs. LanceAround has a conversation with Corrine, the owner. She says she started Alchemy in 1989 as a venue for “artist hairdressers.” She wants her shop to be “fashion forward.” At Alchemy, they want you looking and feeling good about your hair and yourself. It’s no wonder they won the Best of Orlando award in 2009.

Prices range from $23 for a kids cut, $35 to $50 for men (depending on the experience of the stylist) and $45 to $65 for women. Color, chemical processes, styling, deep conditioning and make up are also available at costs from $20 to $125 and up.

Getting your hair done in this creative environment with these top notch stylists? Priceless!

If you are taking a vacation to the Orlando area and you want a vacation from your normal, drab hairstyle, treat yourself to an appointment at Alchemy. Then leave me a comment and send me a picture of your new “do.” I can’t wait to see it!

Authentic Caribbean Ambience

In the 240 seat theatre connected to the Pirate’s Dinner Adventure on the popular International Drive strip, comedians, acrobats and dancers will entertain you in a themed Caribbean outpost with rum and good times. The two hour festivities feature a three course prime rib dinner and ala carte appetizers.  They’ll throw in a signature rum punch for good measure.  Open Tuesday through Saturday the cost is $49.95 ($24.95 if you opt out of dinner) and you must be 18 to enjoy.

Enter a time gone by when sailors and travelers would spend hours in exotic ports-of-call. It’s one of the few venues in town that does not focus on entertaining the children.

Mrs. LanceAround and I got a glimpse of the Tavern at our monthly Central Florida Vacation Rental Managers meeting. We were impressed with the layout of the tavern, bar and stage. The technical details, such as lighting and sound, were excellent. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen the show yet.

If you’ve experienced the Treasure Tavern, leave a comment and let us know how it is.

Oysters, Oysters & More Osyters

August 24, 2010 by

Homeowner Dennis Says, "Eat 'em Raw & Let 'em Slide!"

[Guest Blog Post–Homeowner Dennis is a lawyer in Illinois who owns this beautiful vacation home right beside Disney World.  Last month, during one of his many visits, he discovered Lee & Rick’s Oyster Bar. When he came to my office, he was so ecstatic.  He described it as “a dive” then couldn’t stop talking about how much he enjoyed it!  He give’s us today’s post–LanceAround.]

By Homeowner Dennis

Most people either love them or hate them, but oysters seem to be the craze these days.

In every major city you’ll find a fancy “oyster bar” where you’ll spend 10 bucks for a half dozen of these slimy little mollusks.  They’re served raw, steamed, deep fried, put in chowder or used in all sorts of recipes.  We’ve seen them featured on the food channel in weird eating contests where people will eat hundreds of raw oysters in one sitting.

A Bar For The Whole Family

If you are one of those who just loves these little creatures and can’t get enough, or, if you want to see if  you have the fortitude to down a few raw oysters right out of the shell, then you’re in luck.  Right here in Orlando is Lee & Rick’s Oyster Bar.

This place is known by the locals as the best place in Orlando for oysters.  It’s been around for half a century (now being operated by the son of the original owners.) The outside is a plain bar-type building that has some extra sheet metal to make it resemble a shipwreck.  But you’re here for the oysters, not for the ambiance.  The owner says, “People get really upset if we try to change anything–like paint!”

The oysters are delivered three times a week from the Apalachicola area in the gulf.  Your dining experience begins when you get a table or grab a stool and sit at the cement bar where they spray it down with a garden hose to clean up.

Lee & Rick's Motto

Start by getting a bucket of fresh, raw oysters (2-1/2 to 3 dozen) for 17 bucks and the server (wearing a T-shirt that says, “I eat’m raw!”) cracks them open faster then you can slide ’em down yer gullet. Grab the oyster shell, add a little lemon or hot sauce, put it to your mouth and LET ‘EM SLIDE…get a napkin from the overhead dispenser, chew on a saltine cracker and start over.  You’re allowed to pause for a drink of ice cold beer, if necessary.

THIS PLACE IS AN EXPERIENCE.  (Maybe not the BEST experience, but still an EXPERIENCE!)

Orlando Magazine gave Lee & Rick’s its 2010 Dining Hall of Fame award.  One thing is certain, you’ll get fresh shrimp, crawfish, crab, clams and (of course) OYSTERS–which they sell in any quantity up to a bushel bag.  Don’t expect more than great food–it’s a bar!!  (which is nice because you don’t need to dress up) and it’s OK for children (there’s fries and chicken nuggets.)

If you want to sit at the bar, get there early!

[Ed. Notes–As you can tell, Homeowner Dennis is a bit of a culinary connoisseur.  At Christmas, he often sends my office frozen authentic Chicago deep dish pizza.  Perhaps I can convince him to write a post about which is the better potato chip–Ole Saltys or Mrs. Fisher’s.  Both are handcrafted in Dennis’ hometown.  He’s sent us cases of both kinds.  My whole office loves opening packages from Homeowner Dennis.–LanceAround]

Kouzzina–Good Food, Horrible Atmosphere

August 19, 2010 by

Kouzzina Restaurant on Disney's Boardwalk

Although Number One Son and Daughter love Iron Chef, I have never watched it. I don’t know who Cat Cora is. Mrs. LanceAround and I decided to treat Our Friend Karen to Cat Cora’s recently opened Greek/Southern restaurant, Kouzzina, on the Boardwalk in Disney World.

According to our menu, Cat Cora was born to a family of Greek restaurateurs in Mississippi. Kouzzina means “kitchen” in Greek. Cora became famous as the first female Iron Chef on the Food Network’s hit show. This is her first signature restaurant. She has blended the Greek food of her ancestors with a Southern twist from her native Mississippi.

I decided to begin the evening by parking in the Hollywood Studios parking lot and taking a Disney Friendship boat to the Boardwalk. The flaws in my quixotic plan soon became evident as a light rain shower, longer than anticipated walk to the boat and noise of the boat engine drowning any attempt at conversation made me wish I had just parked at the Boardwalk.

Open Kitchen was N-O-I-S-Y

By the time we arrived at the restaurant, we were starving. Although it was late on a Tuesday night during a slower tourist season, we were dismayed when we were told the wait would be 35 to 45 minutes. Dismay turned to frustration when the wait actually took one hour, 3 minutes and 57 seconds. (a grumpy LanceAround was timing it!)

If we were disappointed by the wait, our discouragement tripled as we encountered three unexpected things:

1. The restaurant, with its large open kitchen, was just one room jam packed with tables and noise so loud that conversation was impossible.

2. The waitress, while knowledgable and efficient, was robotic and inattentive.

3. Thinking that the casual atmosphere of the boardwalk and the assembly line atmosphere of the restaurant and wait staff meant this would be a moderately priced affair, we did not expect entrees priced from $20 to $28 and appetizers approaching $10 each.

Crammed In a Big Box

Our Friend Karen remarked that the restaurant had all the ambience of a Cracker Barrel–only with three times the level of noise! (At least I think that’s what she said. I could barely hear her.)

Just when we thought our experience couldn’t be any more frustrating, the waitress warned us that all the food is freshly prepared so we could expect it to take longer than normal for us to eat. She then helpfully recommended that we could have something sooner by padding our bill with an order of appetizers.  (Although she did not quite say it that way.)

Though the description of the entrees was enticing, we wound up ordering 7 different appetizers and salads. Our fear of an extended wait for food came to a sudden halt when everything was served to us in, literally, two to three minutes. All 7 items arrived before our waitress had time to get Mrs. LanceAround and Our Friend Karen the beverages they had ordered.

“So much for ‘freshly prepared’,” I thought as I noticed that the Spanakopita, a complex phyllo pie of spinach, feta, leeks and dill, was at our table faster than it would have taken a team of chefs to put one together! The climax of our misguided adventure came when I tried to cut the Saganki (a seared Greek cheese with lemon and oregano served next to toasted bread) and got a blistery burn on my finger from the cast iron bowl. It was clear that nothing would go right tonight.

Then, we took our first bite.

Because of my commitment to a new, healthier lifestyle, I was not eating that late at night, so I have to rely on Mrs. LanceAround and Our Friend Karen to report on the experience of actually eating at Kouzzina.  Their opinion was quick–Mrs. LanceAround thought the food was fantastic and Our Friend Karen thought it was just OK.

The Food Was Fantastic For Some, OK for Others

Mrs. LanceAround said the Spanakopita was bursting with flavor, the Saganki was scrumptious, the sweet potato fries were tasty, the greek salad was divine, the goat cheese stuff grape leaf was both unique and delicious, the herbed orzo provided a nice compliment to the harissa yogurt. Kalamata fig and hummus spreads served with grilled pita.

If nothing else, it was an unusual and eclectic mix of tastes and textures.

Seven appetizers and two glasses of wine came to over $70. Mrs. LanceAround and Our Friend Karen were now content as we rode the boat back to the Hollywood Studios parking lot under a now rainless sky. It was a more relaxing and peaceful end to the evening.

I’m reminded of one of my favorite foreign films–Babette’s Feast–which portrays how a community can come together and enjoy each other over a delightful meal. It was interesting to note how our experience at this restaurant so closely paralleled the numerous reviews I found later when researching it on the web.

In summary, skip Kouzzina if you want nice atmosphere or great service. Enjoy it if you are looking for a creative, unique combination of Greek and Southern food and have some money to spend. In other words, the food was good enough to recommend trying Kouzzina despite the horrible atmosphere and service–but just barely.
